Celebrities live their lives under a constant microscope, and we are the ones always looking through the lens. With that, it has been pretty easy to notice something significantly different about Oscar-nominated Gabourey Sidibe. Yes, she's lost weight but she does not want anyone sending congratulations because of it.
Gabourey Sidibe's weight loss journey started last year when she had gastric bypass surgery. It was not to fit some Hollywood standard. It was more about her health. She told People earlier this year, "I just didn't want to worry." A 33-year-old woman staring at a future that may have consisted of Type 2 diabetes, or worse she knew she had to do something. So under the knife, she went. That doesn't mean she wants any sort of accolades for putting her health first.
She opened up to Refinery29 about all the attention she's been getting, but doesn't want, "What had been happening is, since I’ve been losing weight over the past year, people have been saying, ‘Congratulations on your weight loss!’ It doesn’t rock me. It just annoys me because I’m just like, don’t congratulate me on that."
She candidly added, "If you’re going to congratulate me on my weight loss, also congratulate me every time I pee. Congratulate me every time I’m burping. Because my body actually has nothing to do with you, and I don’t really need your support for it."
While Gabourey didn't go into losing weight for the compliments, she doesn't mind one person giving her applause; herself. She has noted time and time again that the weight loss has given her a new confidence in herself.
We do not want to send her any congrats, but we're proud of Gabourey for standing her ground. We are 100% with her on being more than her weight. Her breakout role in 2009's Precious won her some 20 awards, and since then she's gone on to be a scene stealer in both American Horror Story: Coven and Hulu's Difficult People. A true talent, that is what's to be celebrated not Gabourey Sidibe's weight loss but her skills that surely pay the bills.
